The Beginning: Roland Frederick Jones, was born in Texarkana, to the parentage of the late Theron Jones and Emma Richardson Jones. His father, Theron, was a principal in the Texarkana Independent School District at Dunbar and at Fifteenth Street School. His mother, Mrs. Richardson Jones, also taught at Fifteenth Street School, which was recently renamed Theron Jones Elementary, in honor of his Father. Roland had brothers, John Alex and Elbert (Puddin), both preceded him in death.
Education: Roland attended public School in Texarkana, Texas. He graduated from Dunbar High School and then matriculated to and graduated from Prairie View A&M University.
Vocation: Roland was very committed to his profession. Mrs. Emma’s Father was the owner of Richardson Funeral Home, the oldest Black owned and operated funeral home in Texarkana, Texas. Mr. Richardson and Mrs. Emma influenced Roland to attend St. Louis School of Mortuary Science and united with his mother in the Family Business, where he served as Funeral Director In Charge. Upon Mrs. Emma’s death, Roland became the sole owner of Richardson Funeral Home. Roland met the needs of families, too many to be counted. His quiet, kind manner and gentle small laugh was a soothing comfort to a myriad of bereaved souls.
Church Affiliation and Community Involvement: Roland was a pillar in the community and devoted countless hours to helping others and trying to better the community in which he lived. He was a member of the Oak Street Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a Deacon and Trustee. He loved attending Sunday School and remained committed to teacher and serving until his death. His concern for his community was evident by his desire to serve. He tirelessly gave his time to the Texarkana Independent School District, where he served on the Board of Trustees. He also served Texarkana, Texas City as a Councilman.
Summation: Roland touched many lives in incalculable ways. He was a lover of life and people. In addition to his faithfulness to people and service to the community, everyone knew of his love for the “Sport of Kings”, horse racing. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
