Mrs. Bertha Washington was born on August 5, 1924, in Jefferson (Leon County), Texas, to the parentage of Mr. & Mrs. Wesley and Anna Heath Wilson. She attended Macedonia High School outside of Jefferson, Texas, and graduated in 1943. Mrs. Washington briefly attended Bishop College in Marshall, Texas, and later attended Wiley College where she received certification in Cosmetology.
After marriage to John J. Washington and they became proud parentage of six children: Charles (Norma) Washington, Sr. (both deceased), Joyce (Raymond) Watson, Ethel Washington, Don (Leatha) Washington, Elretta Washington, and Sandra Washington (Lige) Roberson.
She is preceded in death by: her parents; husband; brother, Robert T. Wilson; sister and brother-in law, Manie and Charlie Cornelius; cousin, Pearlie Kelly. She leaves 11 grandchildren, 13 Great Grandchildren, and 6 Great-Great-Grandchildren.
Mrs. Washington's employment history includes Nash Elementary School and fifteen years at Lone Star Army Depot. She continued to use her cosmetology skills by providing services for neighborhood residents.
Mrs. Washington had strong family ties with her siblings: Robert T. Wilson and Mamie Lee Cornelius as well as her extended family members. Years ago she accepted Jesus as her person Savior and united with New Town Baptist Church of Texarkana, Texas, where she was active in the adult choir, Sunday school and other church activities where needed.
Mrs. Washington at age 99 passed away peacefully in her home on May 11, 2024 surround by her family.
