Obituary

Harriette Odom McGary, age 76, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister went home to be with the LORD on January 27, 2022. She was born in Texarkana and relocated many times with her parents and sisters in her youth. During her father's military career, the family lived in Mannheim and Nuremberg, Germany and at different bases across the United States. When Harriette was in the 7 th grade, the family moved back to Texarkana where she graduated from Dunbar High School – Class of 1963. After high school, Harriette attended Texarkana College earning an Associate degree.  Many years later she went back to college and earned a Bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University – Texarkana.

She worked more than 10 years at Lone Star and retired from Red River Army Depot after 20 years of service. After an early retirement, she reentered the workforce for a few years at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Area Health Education Center.

She could usually be found, with her husband, supporting their kids and grandkids in various school and select sporting events.  They traveled across the United States and even to Canada watching them play. She was a huge supporter of Liberty-Eylau band and athletics and loved watching the Dallas Cowboys.

She was a member of Sunset Missionary Baptist Church, Sophisticates Social & Civic Club, Dunbar Alumni, and served as a Bowie County election official.

Harriette leaves a loving family to cherish her memories: children, Alicia McGary Coleman, Jerome McGary, Jr. (Charlotte), Valerie McGary Ray (Charles), Christopher McGary (Shaunda); eighteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Bettye Dorsey, Jacqueline Casteel, Georgia Odom; and many special family members including stepchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and friends. Harriette was predeceased by her husband, Jerome McGary, Sr.; parents, George and Mary Odom; and son-in-law, Gary "Maxwell" Coleman.
