Mable Cecilia Burks was born July 2, 1941 in Natchitoches, LA. Her love of reading began at a very early age and she was an avid reader. After graduating from Natchitoches Central High School, she attended Grambling College which is now known as Grambling State University. She was active during her college years, holding several offices. She joined Delta Sigma Theta, Inc as an undergrad. She remained active until the decline of her health. She graduated from Grambling with a Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education. She would return to teach at her Alma Mater for a short time. She signed up for the Peace Corp and worked for the Department of Defense, teaching on military bases. She was able to travel the world
extensively and live in numerous countries. Some of her assignments included Micronesia, American Somoa, Germany and Japan. She retired and moved to Hooks, TX, where she tutored students and substituted at local schools. She lived a life full of adventure and excitement and made numerous friends along the way.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a sister and brother-in-law, Arxavia and Grover Godfrey, a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.
Graveside services for Ms. Burks will be 10 AM Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Chapelwood Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 5 to 7 PM Friday, November 10, 2023 at Haynes Mortuary Inc. Online registration is available at www.haynesmortuary.com
