Mamie Etta
Davis
Aug 5, 1926 — Nov 4, 2019
Beaumont
Mamie Etta Johnson Davis was born August 5, 1926, in Nash, Texas to the late Lionel Allen Johnson and Zualma Hayes Johnson. She was the identical twin to Laura Etta Johnson Houff. Mamie and Laura were the third and fourth children born to this union that consisted entirely of girls. All four children were raised by their grandmother, the late Ida Alpherta Haire Johnson during times that were often difficult. Although they were children, the twins worked hard to help their grandmother. Since there was a scarcity of jobs, Mamie and Laura had to leave the care of their grandmother for a short time and live at an orphanage in Gilmer, Texas. They both told their children stories of the "Orphan Home," and seemed to enjoy their stay there. They returned to Nash to live with their grandmother as soon as she was able to properly care for them. Living through hard times and the depression era taught them to be grateful for all of their blessings, the value of hard work, and a wonderful work ethic. She accepted the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at a young age and united with the Hickory Hill Baptist Church of Nash, Texas. Her love for the Lord was the driving force behind her tireless dedication to her church where she served as a member of the choir, the pianist for the Sunday School (or to fill in for the choir whenever needed), Sunday School teacher, unofficial youth and program director, and a member of the Ruth Circle. She remained a faithful member until her illness caused her to relocate to Beaumont, Texas. After relocating to Beaumont, TX, she joined the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Jesus Christ.
She married Sammie Joe Davis, Sr. December 25, 1948. They remained married until his passing on October 19, 1976. She was the most loving and dedicated mother to six children, who are so thankful that God allowed her to be their mother. Her heart was broken, but her faith in God never wavered when one of those children, Lionel Edward Davis (Emma) proceeded her in death in 2013 at 57 years of age. The children left to cherish her memory and celebrate her life are Sammie Joe Davis, Jr. (Avice), Marva Lourie Davis, Anthony Eugene Davis (LaTonya), Alpherta Lynn Hill (Sylvester), Diana Lanice Miles (Rodney). 13 grandchildren, Dedric Davis, Nikecha Gray, Charmaine Hood, Eric Davis, Christopher Milton, Kendrick Davis, Kerri Rider, Jeremy Davis, Antonia Davis, Kendall Hill, Kaleb Hill, Kaitlyn Hill, and Morgan Miles. 18 great grandchildren, and one precious great-great grandchild, Kaiden McNamara. She also leaves her identical twin sister and very best friend, Laura Etta Houff, and her children, Gary Houff, Harold Houff, Juan Houff, Sherry Young, Cecil Houff, Marion Houff, and Arthur Houff. She was also predeceased by her sisters Ida Thaggard, and Helen Stewart, her niece Doris Ann Lowe, and her nephew Lawrence L Houff.
