Obituary

Shirley Ann Jackson was born February 17, 1953 in Ashdown, Arkansas to the parentage of Walter and Jimmie Vaughn. She departed this earthly life on Sunday, October 4, 2020.

Shirley was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church where she served faithfully as church clerk and hospitality committee chair. She was also instrumental in planning many of the activities and programs that occurred.

As a lifetime member of the Ashdown community, Shirley became the first African-American woman elected to the Ashdown City Council and was a member of the Little River Training School Alumni Association. Her other civic/social involvements included being a charter member of the Texarkana Twin Cities Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Municipal League, Women for the Arts, a TRAHC Volunteer and an active leader in the local Democratic Party.

Shirley was an employee of Red River Army Depot before retiring after 30 years of service. After retiring, she worked in Lanell's Cosmetics, Iva's Cosmetics and owned and operated her own floral shop.

Shirley leaves to cherish lasting memories: her husband, Lowell Jackson of Ashdown, AR; daughter, Tenesha Jackson of Ashdown, AR; grandchildren, Alex Coleman of Fayetteville, AR and A.J. Fondren of Ashdown, AR; sisters, Dorothy A. Henderson (Charles) and Bessie Starks (Andrew) of Ashdown, AR; brothers, Jimmie Ray Vaughn of Atlanta, TX, Roy Vaughn and Michael Vaughn of Ashdown, AR; special nephew, Reginald Henderson of Charlotte, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation for Mrs. Jackson will be Friday from 5 – 7 PM at Haynes Mortuary. Graveside services will be 12 Noon Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Rhodes Cemetery in Ashdown, AR.
